Camera
These images were taken handheld with a Nikon Coolpix P900 which has some advantages but also some disadvantages compared to a DSLR camera.
The Nikon P900 works as an allround compact travel camera with incredible zoom capabilities.
Action Bird Photography Technique
I chose a spot at the rivers edge where I could see was frequent bird activity. The first thing to do is to make yourself comfortable and relax, wait for the action to come to you. Because birds move so quickly from one spot to anather and the movements are unpredictable I set the camera to Auto and Spot Focus for the images below. For birds in flight I used same settings except the focus I set to Focus Tracking.
